“The Germans identify with this country and its national colors. I think that is terrific,” German President Horst Koehler told reporters.
“We are on the right track toward standing up for ourselves and taking pride in what we have achieved since 1945,” he added.
“We can achieve a lot if we have the courage to dare to do something new.
“We should remember that after the World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Chancellor Angela Merkel focused on the German team and coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s achievements, praising them for the way they played throughout the tournament while showing sadness at their exit.
“It’s a pity. It was a great game,” said the Chancellor.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough. But this team can still accomplish a lot,” she added.
The Germans were listed 19th on the FIFA World Rankings going into the World Cup Finals, and many say that they have fought well above their weight, notably ousting the highly fancied Argentina in the quarter finals.
However the last minute loss in the semi final will still be heartbreaking for a nation who were really beginning to believe that they could once again go all the way on home soil.
