Brazil votes in first female leader

Dilma Rouseff wins presidential runoff poll and vows to carry on the legacy of Lula da Silva.

As Brazil’s first female president, Dilma Rouseff will take charge of Latin America’s biggest country and one of the world’s largest economies.

She won Sunday’s presidential poll with a comfortable margin, securing 56 per cent of the vote, 12 per cent more than her rival Jose Serra.

Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reports from the capital Brasilia, where Rousseff supporters have been celebrating in the streets.
