US president visits Afghanistan

Obama tells counterpart Hamid Karzai to do more to improve governance.

In an unannounced visit to Afghanistan – his first as US president – Barack Obama told Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai more needs to be done to combat corruption and improve the rule of law.

The US president also promised some 80,000 US troops serving in Afghanistan all the assistance they need to succeed in their mission, as latest figures show increasing casualty figures for US forces.
