India battles a surge in diabetes

WHO reports that 50 million have diabetes in the South Asian nation and the number could reach 100 million in 12 months.

India will mark World Diabetes Day 2011 by illuminating national landmarks in blue light and organising a mass screening programme to raise awareness about the disease.

An estimated one million people died from diabetes-related illnesses in India last year. The World Health Organisation has said as many as 50 million Indians have the disease and that number could grow to 100 million in the next 12 months.
