Scientists eradicate cattle plague

Rinderpest, or “cattle plague”, becomes second disease in history to be eradicated.

It may not be a household name, but it is one that has made history. Rinderpest – the German name for cattle plague – has felled herds of cattle across the world for centuries, causing human famine and economic disaster.

Veterinary epidemiologists announced this week that it had been eradicated – something that has happened to only one other disease in history – smallpox.

The eradication will have an enormous effect on the health of animal life, and food security.
