Bosnians mark 20 years since war began

War-scarred nation set to remember thousands of victims of conflict marked by near-four-year siege of Sarajevo.

Two decades after the conflict started, the anniversary of the beginning of the Bosnian War is being remembered by the people of the region.

The siege of Sarajevo, the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare, was one of the defining events of the conflict.

Lasting nearly four years, the siege by Bosnian Serb forces left 10,000 people dead, including 1,500 children.

Al Jazeera’s Peter Sharp, who covered the war, returned to the city as its citizens prepared to mark the anniversary.
