Al Jazeera talks with ISAF chief in Kabul

General John R Allen explains US timetable for the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014.

US Marine Corps General John R Allen is commander of the combined NATO and US forces in Afghanistan, known as International Security Assistance Force, as the preparations begin for the US troop withdrawal by September 2014.

General Allen, the top official charged with overseeing the handover of security to Afghan forces, is currently touring the country to ensure a smooth transition takes place.

The threat of the Taliban derailing the withdrawal and transition is still present, and Allen explains why the handover is something like building an airplane in mid-flight.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from southern Afghanistan.
