Damascus residents flee to Lebanon

Thousands leave Syrian capital after week of intensifying clashes between government and rebels.

Tens of thousands of people have fled Damascus after a week of clashes between government forces and the Free Syrian Army, the country’s main armed opposition group.

Many of the refugees who went to neighbouring Lebanon to escape the violence are from the middle and upper classes of society.

Some of those who fled are government sympathisers who refused to join the uprising.
