With inflation running at 45 percent and food prices continuing to rise, many in Sudan are feeling the squeeze of a failing economy.
 
But as Harriet Martin reports from Khartoum, one of the country’s great passions is managing to survive difficult times.

Horses and horse racing are a passion for many Sudanese. And the crowds that come include not just the wealthy owners of the horses but ordinary people, and children from the streets.
