Italy to tighten animal testing laws

Scientists worry stricter laws will disrupt life-saving research in the country by making some testing illegal.

Italy’s parliament is preparing to ratify new legislation that will introduce stricter controls on animal testing and ban the breeding of animals for the purpose of testing.

Animal-rights campaigners are welcoming the new laws, but some scientists fear important life-saving research could be affected. The new laws, for example, would make transplanting organs into animals for cancer research illegal.

Italy already has some of the strictest rules on animal testing in Europe.
