Maldives’ capital feels population pressure

Overcrowding strains resources in Male, which is reeling from water shortage caused by damage to desalination plant.

Most people in the capital of the Maldives have not had running water for several days.

The island’s only desalination plant was damaged in a fire last week, but lack of water is not the only problem facing the city.

Male is noisy, chaotic and overcrowded, with more than 180,000 people crammed into two square kilometres of land. The city’s population has outgrown its size, putting too much pressure on resources.

Al Jazeera’s Nicole Johnston reports from Male.
