Peru miners’ protests turn violent

Police fire tear gas at miners protesting against planned government reforms of their industry.

Demonstrations by Peruvian miners angered by low pay and government plans to reform their industry have turned violent.

Police fired tear gas and fought with the protesters on Monday, as they marched towards Congress. The miners are opposed to a new law that will criminalise working in mines without being registered.

Some miners say the plans benefit big businesses but the government says that they are trying to protect the Amazon rainforest.

Al Jazeera’s Caroline Malone reports.
