Peru seeks to shape rural ‘middle class’

New initiative helps more than 60,000 families escape poverty as it teaches innovative ways of more productive farming.

For centuries Peruvians have used the mountains to carve out workable farmland. The difficult terrain is just one of the challenges farmers face, and many struggle to grow enough food for their families.

But a new programme is helping tens of thousands of people work their way out of poverty.
