Why do images of the prophet offend Muslims?

Muslim leaders say there is no justification for violence as a response to depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.

Muslim groups worldwide have expressed their anger after three gunmen killed 12 people in an attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Courting controversy with satirical pieces on religion, politics and public affairs, publications such as Charlie Hebdo have been targeted in the past for satirising the Prophet Muhammad.

The Prophet is deeply revered by Muslims and any kind of visual depiction is forbidden.
