Hospitals and medical facilities in the Indian city are too overburdened and often have to turn away patients.
A fire broke out in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, at one of its oldest buildings in the city, local media reports.
Twenty fire engines were deployed to the burning New Secretariat building on Friday, which houses government offices, NDTV news agency reported.
It was not as yet clear if people were trapped inside the building but another Indian news website, DNA, reported that the fire had broken out on the eighth floor of the 10-storey building.
