Aguero scores double on Man City debut

Sergio Aguero burst onto the Premier League scene on Monday helping Manchester City to a dominating 4-0 win over Swansea.

Two goals and an assist certainly wasn’t a bad start for the player on his Premier League debut.

It took the Argentine under ten minutes to open his account as Manchester City produced the sort of attacking display that will leave many of their Premier League rivals shaking in their fluorescent boots.

City had to part with over $60 million to sign the striker, however, Aguero went a long way to prove why he may have been worth every single dollar, and perhaps a few more.

Swansea, the first Welsh team to play in the Premier League, were by no means humiliated on their debut, frustrating their opposition during a goalless first half.

The Swans’ goalkeeper Michel Vorm made a couple of great saves and looks like a good signing for Brendan Rodgers.

However, the superior quality of City’s players, especially David Silva, eventually shone through.

The floodgates were opened after Edin Dzeko put City ahead shortly after the break capitalising on Vorm’s first inaccuracy slotting a rebound into the empty net after the goalkeeper failed to control Adam Johnson’s shot.

The Aguero show

After that it was nearly all about super-sub Aguero – although it is unlikely we will be seeing him start from the bench all too often.

“He is a fantastic striker,” City manager Roberto Mancini said.

“He’s young, I think for us he will be a fantastic player in the future.”

After replacing Nigel de Jong in the 62nd minute, the Argentine nearly scored the first time he touched the ball, receiving a pass at the edge of the area and turning deftly to fire a shot that forced Vorm into a diving save.

The goalkeeper then reacted quickly to stop Toure’s close-range effort from the rebound.

But he was helpless when Aguero rushed into the left side of the area five minutes later and met Micah Richards’ cross at the far post to slot it into the empty net to give City a 2-0 lead.

“They (speak) the same language. I think they are both fantastic players, and they play football very, very well”

The former Atletico Madrid forward nearly scored again when he took a pass from Dzeko in the area but his chip over Vorm went wide and was heading over the line when Aguero chased it down and kicked it back over his head to Silva, who slotted it into the net.

The fourth goal was an individual effort, receiving the ball about 30 yards from goal, laying the ball up with a light touch and blasting a shot into the left side of the net.

“He showed his ability to be a world-class player,” Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers said.

In contrast, Swansea’s own record signing Danny Graham – who cost less than a 10th of Aguero’s fee – was relatively anonymous on his debut.

Silva had been City’s best players for the first 60 minutes and nearly scored twice in the first half, but was thwarted by Vorm and the crossbar.

Together with Aguero, City may have one of the Premier League’s most potent attacking duos as the club tries to mold their many expensive signings into a title-winning team.

“They (speak) the same language. I think they are both fantastic players, and they play football very, very well,” Mancini said.

For Swansea, it was a rough start to their first Premier League campaign. While Vorm impressed in his first game after joining from Utrecht in the offseason, Swansea showed little in the way of attack.

City counterpart Joe Hart was only called into action once, when he dove to swat away Stephen Dobbie’s long-range shot on a counterattack in the 53rd minute.

On first impressions, Manchester City look to have a substantially stronger team than last season.

And with manager Roberto Mancini telling the press that Aguero hasn’t yet fully recovered from Copa America duty, Aguero could be a deciding factor in who lifts the Premier League trophy this season.
